Bernath Court

We are keeping the names private to protect the identity of our clients.  TOGHS received an email from a gentleman by the name Kevin West early this September. Kevin said he had a friend he works with named Pam who owned a townhouse here in Toledo that she bought in October 2007. She had lived there with her 27 year old Daughter Tiffany.

Kevin also informed us that Pam had moved out of the home in early 2008 due to poltergeist activity. The home is now sitting empty and in foreclosure. Neither electricity nor water.

Once we sat down and interviewed Kevin further we documented in our notes several reports of paranormal activity. Feelings of uneasiness, feelings of being watched, strange noises throughout the home at night. Tiffany claimed that one night her bed began to shake while lying in it, at the same time her wall calendar had falling off the wall, Dishes being moved from one side of the kitchen counter to the other, Curtains shaking without reason, They both reported to Kevin that the home would never get warm despite the thermostat set at 80 degrees. The activity continued to escalate to the extent that at one time Tiffany was outside and had seen a man standing in the window staring out at her. Pam at one time swept the carpeting then left the house only to come back and find footsteps in the upstairs bedroom carpet. They both had heard the voice of a man telling them to get out; this voice came from within the upstairs bathroom. Kevin then told us that Pam reported to him that she had been pushed and her Daughter Tiffany had been punched. They decided to move out.

The Mansion House

Mansion House reflection in glassTOGHS visited this historical home that sits in Tu-Endie-Wei Park while visiting Chief Cornstalks burial site. Once we were invited in we were told the home was also haunted, The tour guide assured me that once I was upstairs on the second floor, I would be able to capture guest from the past on camera. She also said my hair might turn white from fear. While taking several pictures on each of the three floors Butch reported being touched at the same time his camera malfunctioned. I have several pictures of the inside of this historical home below. Take a look at the picture of me in a reflection in the glass. I took another 1 second later and it looks like someone with a sword looking to the right. There wasn’t anyone behind me at the time the photo was taken. Maybe the tour guide was right!

Cornstalk Curse

Cornstalk Monument ButchAlmost two centuries before the shadow of the Mothman reared its head in Point Pleasant, West Virginia; the land around the Ohio River ran red with blood. As the inhabitants of the American colonies began to push their way to the west, and later fought for their independence from Britain, they entered into deadly combat with the Native American inhabitants of the land. Perhaps their greatest foe in these early Indian wars was Chief Cornstalk, who later became a friend to the Americans. But treachery, deception and murder would bring an end to the chief’s life and a curse that he placed on Point Pleasant would linger for 200 years, bringing tragedy, death and disaster….

There is no denying that the southeastern corner of Ohio, and the surrounding area of West Virginia, is considered by many to be one of the most haunted areas of the country. West Virginia has long been thought of as one of the strangest parts of the country in regards to ghosts, legends and strange happenings. This part of the country, which was originally a part of Virginia, was regarded by the Native Americans as a “haunted” spot, plagued with ghost lights, phantoms and strange creatures. The town of Parkersburg, just north on the river from Point Pleasant, has more than its share of ghosts and nearby is Athens County, Ohio, home to the most haunted city in the entire state.

The Mothman

Mothman bunker 1 ButchThe legend of Mothman has intrigued me since I was a kid, Ever since I watched the movie The Mothman Prophesies I knew Point Pleasant would be on our list of places to explore. The story goes back to the years 1966 and 1967. During this time there were sightings of a huge moth-like creature in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.

TOGHS arrived in Point Pleasant on Saturday morning August 8, 2009. The first thing we noticed was the town was jumping and busy getting ready for the Point Pleasant downtown annual parade. We first stopped in at The Point (Where the rivers meet) this is a little Souvenir/Coffee shop located at 330 Main Street. Once inside we met an incredibly friendly gentleman by the name Bob Landrum. Bob was working that morning and obviously very busy getting ready for the days festivities. Even though he was busy he took the time to share his knowledge of the town’s history, the legendary hauntings including the Silver Bridge tragedy, Chief Cornstalk, The 200 year curse as well as his personal experiences with the Mothman. Bob gave us directions to everything and anything we wanted to see while we were in town including the famous TNT bunkers.

Moonville Tunnel

Moonville Tunnel 129TOGHS visited the legendary Moonville Tunnel on Saturday August 8, 2009. Butch, Jeff and I hiked through the woods of the Zaleski Forest. We arrived just before sunset. We also had another couple by the names of Nathan & Melissa Young who followed us up path leading to the tunnel. It was a relatively easy hike and our new friends made the hike seem even easier. We shared stories as we approached the tunnel and were there within 15 minutes of leaving our vehicles along side the path entrance on Shea Rd. Once we reached the top of the hill, I could see the massive tunnel to my left. I was really amazed how historical it looked and could hardly wait to enter the tunnel itself.

Hope Furnace

Hope Furnace 2TOGHS stopped by the reported Haunted Hope Furnace on the way to the Moonville Tunnel. The Hope Furnace is located just down the road from Lake Hope State Park outside of McArthur, Ohio. It’s located off State Route 278.

The Hope Furnace was founded in 1854 and it remained in operation until 1875. It produced some of the best iron in the world. The iron made at these furnaces was used to make weaponry for the Civil War. The Hope Furnaces operated 24 hours a day and could produce up to fifteen tons of cast iron each day. However, shortly after the end of the Civil War the furnaces were no longer used.

Athens Follow-Up #2

Athens ClockTOGHS visited Athens again on Friday August 7, 2009 while on our road trip to Point Pleasant, W. Virginia. Jeff, Butch and I stopped to visit Sarah Thomas and see what changes if any were made to the Asylum cemetery and the Tuberculosis Ward. We noticed that the cemetery has had some improvements made. There is now a stairway down to the lower level of the cemetery where Sarah is buried.  It also looks like some headstones have been replaced in a row along the lower level. The Tuberculosis ward has also been updated in regards to security, The old steel doors have been welded shut in order to help keep the living out. After visiting the Ridges we stopped by the Old State street cemetery before continuing our journey to Point Pleasant. I’ve added some new pictures of this legendary Haunted town.

Glouster Haunted Cabin

The Cabin in Glouster 8Haunted cabin in the hills of Glouster, Ohio August 7, 2009.    This cabin is actually an old small three-room home that is now over a hundred years old. It is set up in the hills of Glouster, Ohio and backed up against the forest. It is own by the Family of TOGHS team member Mike Stiger. It has electricity but no running water. TOGHS team member Mike Stiger’s family bought the property and worked for the local mining company and built the home themselves. Twelve people including 10 children were raised in the home that has now sat empty for the past thirty plus years. Although family members visit the home from time to time, nobody lives in the home any longer. Family members have reported strange noises, footsteps walking through the kitchen and out the back door. On one occasion the Grandfather was seen walking the property and on another the Aunt was seen waving goodbye from a window. This would not have seemed so strange if both family members were still living.

Feltman Building

Feltman_Building_8609_181TOGHS was told about this Haunted location by a mutual friend of ours this past July. As our client Dominic told of the hauntings and the history of the building. I became more and more intrigued. By the time we finished our brief conversation, I had already decided TOGHS would want to take this case. We scheduled a walk through of the building with Dominic for later that week in late July. TOGHS team members Marie, Mike, Joe and I arrived at the building in the early evening for our scheduled walk through and interview with Dominic. The Feltman Building stands six stories tall, over 100 years old and has housed hundreds of tenants over this period of time, It was originally one of the first banks in downtown Toledo and still has the old vault rooms in place. The top floors are being renovated and will be rented out as condominiums some time soon. The first floor is rented out to local rock bands that practice their musical skills and hold jam sessions. Dominic introduced us to other band members and gave us a chance to interview them as well. We were told that the huge cellar was the part of the old building that most of the hauntings were occurring.

Dorr Street

Dorr Street 2This was one of the hardest and longest Investigations that TOGHS has encountered. We did several separate investigations over the course of four months. We are not revealing the real names or address of our client to protect their privacy. In February 2009, TOGHS received a phone call from a gentleman named Tom who owns a residence on Dorr Street. He told us he did not live there himself but was renting the home to a family of six. Tom wanted information about Hauntings and Poltergeist. He told us that his tenants were reporting both types of activity in the home. After ending our hour-long conversation, TOGHS contacted the tenants and interviewed the Grandmother (Beth) in regards to the reported paranormal activity.
