Ohio State Insane Asylum Tuberculosis Ward, Athens

The old tuberculosis ward is the sole abandoned building remaining on the grounds of the Ridges. It was built in 1924 on top of a large hill, totally isolated from the rest if the facility. In the late 70’s, the building became the “Beacon School” for mentally challenged students and young adults. It was abandoned in the early 1980’s. Over the years many of the other buildings have been renovated and are now being used by the University. Some are used for classrooms while others are for storage; the large main building (formally the old Athens Lunatic Asylum) is now the Kennedy Arts Museum. The TB ward is the only building that remains untouched and abandoned. It stands alone on top of the hill, just above the cemetery. Continue reading
South Street
South Ave Investigation: April 9, 2010
This case was brought to TOGHS by Case Manager Marie. During Marie’s interview, she learned that his side by side Duplex home on South Avenue was built in 1897. It has had many different owners over the past century. One of the former owner’s Wilton C Lyman had a very mysterious past. Wilton lived in the home from 1941 through 1954 along with whom we believe to be his wife Annie Mae. It looks as though he may have bought the home from his Father Louis A Lyman who owned the home previously. On December 24, 1954 Wilton came up missing. The newspaper reports stated Continue reading

Kelsey Avenue
Bernath Court
We are keeping the names private to protect the identity of our clients. TOGHS received an email from a gentleman by the name Kevin West early this September. Kevin said he had a friend he works with named Pam who owned a townhouse here in Toledo that she bought in October 2007. She had lived there with her 27 year old Daughter Tiffany.
Kevin also informed us that Pam had moved out of the home in early 2008 due to poltergeist activity. The home is now sitting empty and in foreclosure. Neither electricity nor water.
Once we sat down and interviewed Kevin further we documented in our notes several reports of paranormal activity. Feelings of uneasiness, feelings of being watched, strange noises throughout the home at night. Tiffany claimed that one night her bed began to shake while lying in it, at the same time her wall calendar had falling off the wall, Dishes being moved from one side of the kitchen counter to the other, Curtains shaking without reason, They both reported to Kevin that the home would never get warm despite the thermostat set at 80 degrees. The activity continued to escalate to the extent that at one time Tiffany was outside and had seen a man standing in the window staring out at her. Pam at one time swept the carpeting then left the house only to come back and find footsteps in the upstairs bedroom carpet. They both had heard the voice of a man telling them to get out; this voice came from within the upstairs bathroom. Kevin then told us that Pam reported to him that she had been pushed and her Daughter Tiffany had been punched. They decided to move out.

The Mansion House
TOGHS visited this historical home that sits in Tu-Endie-Wei Park while visiting Chief Cornstalks burial site. Once we were invited in we were told the home was also haunted, The tour guide assured me that once I was upstairs on the second floor, I would be able to capture guest from the past on camera. She also said my hair might turn white from fear. While taking several pictures on each of the three floors Butch reported being touched at the same time his camera malfunctioned. I have several pictures of the inside of this historical home below. Take a look at the picture of me in a reflection in the glass. I took another 1 second later and it looks like someone with a sword looking to the right. There wasn’t anyone behind me at the time the photo was taken. Maybe the tour guide was right!

Cornstalk Curse
Almost two centuries before the shadow of the Mothman reared its head in Point Pleasant, West Virginia; the land around the Ohio River ran red with blood. As the inhabitants of the American colonies began to push their way to the west, and later fought for their independence from Britain, they entered into deadly combat with the Native American inhabitants of the land. Perhaps their greatest foe in these early Indian wars was Chief Cornstalk, who later became a friend to the Americans. But treachery, deception and murder would bring an end to the chief’s life and a curse that he placed on Point Pleasant would linger for 200 years, bringing tragedy, death and disaster….
There is no denying that the southeastern corner of Ohio, and the surrounding area of West Virginia, is considered by many to be one of the most haunted areas of the country. West Virginia has long been thought of as one of the strangest parts of the country in regards to ghosts, legends and strange happenings. This part of the country, which was originally a part of Virginia, was regarded by the Native Americans as a “haunted” spot, plagued with ghost lights, phantoms and strange creatures. The town of Parkersburg, just north on the river from Point Pleasant, has more than its share of ghosts and nearby is Athens County, Ohio, home to the most haunted city in the entire state.

The Mothman
The legend of Mothman has intrigued me since I was a kid, Ever since I watched the movie The Mothman Prophesies I knew Point Pleasant would be on our list of places to explore. The story goes back to the years 1966 and 1967. During this time there were sightings of a huge moth-like creature in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
TOGHS arrived in Point Pleasant on Saturday morning August 8, 2009. The first thing we noticed was the town was jumping and busy getting ready for the Point Pleasant downtown annual parade. We first stopped in at The Point (Where the rivers meet) this is a little Souvenir/Coffee shop located at 330 Main Street. Once inside we met an incredibly friendly gentleman by the name Bob Landrum. Bob was working that morning and obviously very busy getting ready for the days festivities. Even though he was busy he took the time to share his knowledge of the town’s history, the legendary hauntings including the Silver Bridge tragedy, Chief Cornstalk, The 200 year curse as well as his personal experiences with the Mothman. Bob gave us directions to everything and anything we wanted to see while we were in town including the famous TNT bunkers.

TOGHS visited the legendary Moonville Tunnel on Saturday August 8, 2009. Butch, Jeff and I hiked through the woods of the Zaleski Forest. We arrived just before sunset. We also had another couple by the names of Nathan & Melissa Young who followed us up path leading to the tunnel. It was a relatively easy hike and our new friends made the hike seem even easier. We shared stories as we approached the tunnel and were there within 15 minutes of leaving our vehicles along side the path entrance on Shea Rd. Once we reached the top of the hill, I could see the massive tunnel to my left. I was really amazed how historical it looked and could hardly wait to enter the tunnel itself.
